After an unprecedented service shutdown for nearly five months due to labour action, BC Transportation's public transit bus services along the Sea to Sky Corridor will resume this Wednesday, June 22.

With free rides in place for the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the District of Squamish for a week — at least until July 3 — to welcome passengers on board, show rider appreciation, and give time to buy passes, bus routes in Whistler, Squamish, and Pemberton will resume at the start of the day.

While Pemberton's local government will also be providing free transit, the termination date is still being finalised.

The municipal governments may also provide additional individual fare promotions, which will be announced soon, the public transit authority has said.

On June 14, when union members voted in favour of the negotiated contract with the employer, the strike by bus drivers and maintenance workers for BC Transit's services along the Sea to Sky Corridor came to an end. A 15.5 percent wage raise over the course of the five-year collective bargaining agreement, retroactive to April 2022, is also included. Members also received concessions on their pension plans and obtained benefit coverage for part-time employees, who had previously been denied benefits.

While Pemberton's local government will also be providing free transit, the termination date is still being finalised.

However, because of the strike's 136 nonstop days, which made it the longest in BC history, BC Transit was unable to resume operations right away when the contract was approved.

According to the public transit agency, bus drivers must update their training after being away from the wheel for several months in order to ensure a safe return to service. This process, which is "a common method when resuming service after a set amount of time away from day-to-day service," entails becoming familiar with the operational processes, responsibilities, and equipment.
