Farmington is a city in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States. The city had a total population of 45,877 people according to the 2010 census.
Farmington (and surrounding San Juan County) is one of New Mexico's four Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Farmington's population was 44,372 according to the United States Census Bureau in 2019. Farmington is located on the Colorado Plateau, at the confluence of the San Juan River, the Animas River, and the La Plata River.
Farmington is the county seat of San Juan County, which covers 5,538 square miles and is one of the largest counties in the United States (14,340 km2). Aztec is the county seat and the other city in San Juan County. Farmington is the commercial hub for most of northwestern New Mexico and the four-state Four Corners region.
Farmington is located at or near the crossroads of three major highways: US Highway 550, US Highway 64, and New Mexico Highway 371. It is located on the Trails of the Ancients Byway, one of New Mexico's designated Scenic Byways.
San Juan County's primary industries are the production of petroleum, natural gas, and coal. The Navajo and San Juan mines, operated by BHP Billiton, are located 15 to 19 miles (24 to 31 kilometres) southwest of Farmington. The coal extracted from the Navajo and San Juan mines is entirely used to power the nearby Four Corners Generating Station and San Juan Generating Station.
For the past 50 years, Ricketts Park (capacity 5,072) in Farmington has hosted the Connie Mack World Series baseball tournament. Players in the Connie Mack league range in age from 16 to 18. The Connie Mack World Series features ten or more teams from across the United States, including Puerto Rico.
San Juan Plaza in Farmington hosts an annual strongman competition on the last Saturday of July. Every year, Farmington hosts a riverfest.
Rivers in the area are celebrated with a festival featuring music, fine arts, food, and entertainment, as well as a 10K and 5K run and walk, riverside trail walks, and river raft rides.
