The Audi RS4 Avant features a honeycomb grille, massive air vents beneath the headlights, and a sporty front bumper. Big 19-inch alloy wheels are mounted on bulging wheel arches, and a pair of massive oval exhaust pipes protrude from the back bumper.
Choosing an Audi RS4 Avant over a standard A4 estate is akin to switching from the bus to a helicopter for your morning commute — you'll spend a lot more money, but you'll get to work faster and in luxury.
Inside, the improvements are more modest, but they all add up to one of the nicest interiors of any estate car. A sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel that isn't overly thick is included. The frosting on the cake is a pair of leather sports seats that hug your body in all the right places.
However, the RS 4's simple dashboard design is identical to that of a standard A4, making it appear and feel even more premium. You do, however, receive Audi's stunning 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit display as standard, unlike the ordinary A4.
The combination of a 450hp twin-turbo V6 petrol engine and Audi's quattro four-wheel-drive system allows the Audi RS 4 Avant to cover terrain so swiftly that it's as if Audi has rewritten the rules of physics. It will officially accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds (though we were able to do it significantly faster), and it will go on to a top speed of 155 mph – or 174 mph if you pay to have the speed limits removed.
The suspension relaxes, the exhaust quietens, and the automatic gearbox shifts become more smooth when the Drive Select is set to Comfort, making the Audi RS 4 Avant simple to drive in town and astonishingly pleasant over bumps.
